Online Resources: ESOL Links

 

Please note: 

¨        The following Web resources are intended for use by ESOL tutors and represent a broad array of topics related to teaching English language skills. While some of these sites require a fee for their services, tutors should not overlook them because they contain links to additional sites not listed here.     

A4ESL

This huge collection of HTML and Java quizzes can be used by both tutors and students. Quizzes are rated from easy to difficult and test a broad range of language competencies.

 

CNN Learning Resources    

The Learning Resources Website is provided by CNN San Francisco and contains news articles available in abridged (easy) and regular versions.  Each article comes with a set of questions to check comprehension, and links to additional information on the article topic. A multimedia component is often included with each article. 

Dave’s ESL Cafe   

A favorite site of ESOL learners and teachers.  Useful, fun quizzes on a variety of topics:  prepositions, geography, grammar, writing, and more.  Contains fun things like chats and discussion groups which are not learner centered but can support ESOL learning.  Information on slang and idioms, phrasal verbs (for example, to “act up,” and “take apart”).

English Club

Another useful resource for tutors and learners alike. Reference material pertaining to grammar, plus a sizeable collection of quizzes make the English Club a site worth visiting often.    

English Online

This site contains materials for teaching and learning English—both topical information (for example, information on governments, holidays, and history) and practice in English (vocabulary, listening, quizzes, etc.).  Lesson plan ideas are also featured.

Email Projects Home Page  

This page contains lesson plans and resources for lessons on a variety of topics.  One section includes pictures of real fruits and vegetables.  There are also chats, student Web pages, and information on how to buy a house in the U.S.

English For All

Five stories in 20 episodes highlight this video-based collection of lessons that integrate English language skills with life skills. This is a free site, although registration is required. Lessons can be viewed on the computer or on videos available in the LVRV office. Lesson worksheets are available in PDF for all 20 episodes. 

ESL Games

This page contains an index of fun activities to help students learn English. The games listed here may be used with one or several learners.  

ESLhome

ESOLhome features a variety of lessons for students and useful resources for tutors and classroom teachers. Menu selections for students include listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, civics and testing. Teacher/tutor selections include lessons, thematic units, suggested teaching methods and a links page.

ESL Loop

This site allows users to access a Webring of highly useful sites related to English language instruction. Contents include student projects and activities, professional research and presentations, English for Science and Technology and job opportunities in the ESOL field.

ESL Quiz Center

This collection of quizzes is a page of Dave's ESL Cafe, but deserves a link of its own because of its size. A great resource for EL/Civics quizzes. Topics include: geography, grammar, history, idioms and slang, people, reading comprehension, science, world culture, writing.

E-Square      

To enter the site, click on one of the buildings:  Civic Center, Health Center, Jobs and Work, Computer Center, or Special Features.  From the same location you can find “E-Square Two”: Library, Early Childhood Center, Family Center, Community Arts, Home Buying and Rentals.  The site is geared toward learners expressing opinions and ideas, rather than gaining English language skills per se.  Some interesting information on home buying, immigration links, and job search information.

Idioms and Slang

What learner doesn't enjoy learning about American slang and idioms? Here is an extensive list of Websites that catalogue more than anyone would need to know about idioms and slang, complete with explanations and quizzes. 

INS – Immigration and Naturalization Service   

Lots of information on citizenship, residency requirements, visas, and other immigration-related issues are located here. 

The Key New Readers Newspaper 

This site contains easy-to-read news articles for ESOL and Basic Literacy learners at various levels.  Featured lesson plans come with articles and quizzes on the reading material.

Useful links for ESOL instruction, listed by topic. If you can't find what you're looking for here, you're in bigger trouble than you think.

Literacy Volunteers of Rochester  

Website of the Literacy Volunteers of Rochester, NY.  Contains links to learner resources and a variety of instructional support materials for tutors. "Tutors in Touch" is an especially useful discussion group for tutors with questions about anything related to the ESOL field. 

Multiple Intelligences

Of special interest to instructors of all kinds is this Eric Digest article about the Multiple Intelligences. This reference is a quick, comprehensive explanation of the Multiple Intelligences and their implications for classroom teaching or one-to-one tutoring.

National Center for ESL Literacy Education                 

This site contains articles about teaching ESOL, FAQs about ESOL literacy, lists of useful books, a listserv that tutors can join to discuss ideas with other tutors and teachers, a newsletter, and more.  The listserv is easy to join; go directly to this portion of the Website by clicking here: http://www.cal.org/ncle/nifl-esl.htm. NCLE EL/Civics Activities for Adults; Activities Using Music

This NCLE page offers ideas and resources for integrating singing and music into the study of English and civics. Activities are categorized from beginner to high intermediate/advanced levels

One World, One People:  ESOL/TESOL Lessons           

Contains ESOL/TESOL lessons on a variety of topics, from verbs, letter pairs, tongue twisters, writing research papers.  Also contains suggestions for easy games. 

Peak English

This company offers online courses for a fee, but free membership gives you access to coaching exercises, chat rooms, bulletin boards, pen pals, games, reference material, their bookstore and links.

Quia

Quia’s site contains lots of fun internet games, including a Jeopardy-like game on verb tenses that can be played by one or two people at a time.  The games and other materials for ESOL are found by clicking on "Instructor Zone" on the main page, then click on “English” under the "Subject Categories" list on Quia’s main page. 

Randall’s ESL Cyber Listening Lab           

The ESL Cyber Listening Lab contains lots of good listening quizzes for ESOL learners. Quizzes are categorized as easy, medium and difficult.

Rong-Chang Li’s ESL Site  

This site contains information on listening, reading, writing, lesson plans, business English, pronunciation and more.  There are also links to popular ESL sites.  Click on http://www.rong-chang.com/book to go directly to the page with dialogues to read, listen and practice.

TESL Journal            

The Internet TESL Journal is a monthly Web journal for ESOL tutors/teachers.  Contains lesson plan ideas, informational articles, and a large collection of self-study quizzes for ESOL students.  The quizzes cover topics such as grammar, idioms, and vocabulary.  To go directly to the quiz page, click on the following link: http://www.aitech.ac.jp/~iteslj/quizzes.

TOEFL            

Official site of the Test of English as a Foreign Language.  This site provides information about the test (who should take it and how to prepare) as well as sample questions for downloading.

Verizon Literacy Campus

The Verizon Literacy Network is a collaboration of leading literacy organizations. From general information about literacy issues and volunteering, to a lengthy list of online courses, the VLC site is a good place to start for those interested in becoming involved in literacy issues. VLC is funded through a generous grant from Verizon Communications.

Virginia Adult Learning Resource Center

This is arguably Virginia's most popular one-stop shopping site for ESOL teaching resources. From online courses to resources and information about ESOL instruction in the state of Virginia, it's all here. Tutors can find a wealth of Virginia-based ESOL resources by going directly to EL/Civics links page at: http://www.aelweb.vcu.edu/links/elcivics.shtml
